Fillia Reginae "Daughter of the Queen"
Much Loved Sorrel Mare
Granddaughter of Bunny
Daughter of Daisy
April 2003 - March 2008
| Quote: | The Wall Flower
Wrap these sweet, kind, gentle horses up and keep them safe. They are not very brave and tend to internalize their worries. They want to please and will try very hard for you, but they can be pushed too fast very easily. They make few demands of you and are quite content to perform the same tasks repeatedly as long as you are pleased with them and the jobs are not to strenuous. Quiet enough for the beginner once they understand what is expected of them. |
I don't really like the term 'wall flower' for such a soul as my Reginae but... this pretty much pegs who she was. Except for the 'strenuous' part. She was ready and willing to do whatever I asked of her as exampled in my report of that ride we had a month ago.
And from which she never really recovered. I have no idea what exactly was wrong w/her... results haven't gotten back from the vet and Carl spoke w/him tonight (he happens to live near us and they passed on the road).
She was in my 'hospital' pen Friday and Saturday morning after having a couple days out in the pasture. She was doing so much better walking and I wasn't so concerned w/her falling down into the creek or anything.... so I let her out to have some 'play time'. Which she took great advantage of.
But she quit eating her medicated grain so I started having to squirt it down her throat. I gave them to her Friday night, in her pen, and then had several things to do Saturday morning. She was really wanting out all day Saturday and would huffle at me every time I walked out the door... she would be standing down at that gate looking hopefully in my direction.
So.
I sprayed her w/some water (it was really warm and she LOVES getting a shower) and let her out.
She looked very happy and pinned those big ole ears at Murry, the molly.
We had a show Saturday night and I had to go w/Carl early this morning to take a rental car back... didn't check on her either time... figured she was eating grass and hay and was happy.
But right in the midle of church I realized I hadn't seen her at the barn w/the other horses and I hadn't seen her out in the pasture... it was all I could do not to get up right then and head to the house. After services Carl and I headed home ASAP. He went one way in the pasture, I went the other... and he found her.
Under some pine trees.
I knew it might come to this. I knew it I knew it... but it's still so hard. To see her lying there so very still. And the WORST part is I wasn't there for her. And I know... I know... animals go off alone to die. And that's probably why she wanted out of that pen so badly.
She was in her pasture, in a safe place, and there are no marks on her save a small scrape by her eye.
All I can do is be grateful we were on good terms here at the end and thank God for the time he gave me w/her.
She was one of a kind. As was her dam and her grand dam... she's the last of her line and I miss them all.

Thanks, everyone.
It was fairly a huge blow for me. I was realy, reeeeeally thinking she was gonna pull through. All I had to do was wait til her blood count picked up and she'd be less depressed and start eating again.
I'm not one to dwell in the past though. She's gone. The only regret I have is that I didn't straighten my act up sooner and start relating to her better years ago.
I'll remember her always... just like I do Bunny and Daisy.
I better shut up... I'll start crying again. :) sylvia |
