|
|
Zenith and Rizah are 6 yr old mares.
They came to us as PMU rescues. A wonderful woman rescued
and placed over 60 PMU horses in 2004.
40 of them came from a "good ranch". They were used to people,
could be haltered, and handeled. They were in great shape, and very
healthy. The other 20 came from a "bad farm"
The rancher also butchered horses and cattle. They were in horrible
condition. Worms, lice, fear, hooves dangerously overgrown, etc.
I honestly didn't think they would survive. Their story is a long one, I will fill it in a bit at a time. This is what they looked like at age 2,
after they had been with us for a month, and had gained a lot of weight.
Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of when they first came home. My camera malfunctioned, and I lost them all.
Here they are the next year, as 3 yr olds.
And at age 4. What a difference, eh!
And age 5.
Both of them are absolutely amazing. I am proud to know them. They have taught me soooooo much about communication. it has been an honor. |

| If Zenith would co-operate ....... I would train them as a team. Rizah loves anything harness realated. Zenith .... not so much. She thinks its just wrong. lol Its a little easier during the summer. Rizah is much darker than Zenith. If Rizah didn't have the lighter hairs in her tail, she would be bay. Zenith has streaks. |

Yeah, I have given a lot of thought to training them as a team. . Rizah loves to work in harness. Zenith on the other hand hates it. She thinks its just wrong to go first. She prefers to follow. She's the same way with circle work. She gets bored very quickly, so we do most of her schooling on the trail. A couple of nice circles in a field here, some serpentines as we walk down a dirt road. If I set a task for my horses and they show me that they find it completely distasteful, I won't force it on them. They have a choice. I'm hoping that Rizah will eventually set a good example for her.
Ah well! Eventually I will get it accross to her that it could possibly be fun. As it is I walk them as a team all the time. They are almost the same size, but even though Rizah is the smaller of the two, she has a much longer stride. Zenith is a poky mare. Rizah is a prancy, dancy kind of girl. They would look sharp in a fancy 2 seater carriage, though. I work / and live next to a museum, where we use Canadian horses to pull the wagon, and carriages. I plan to ride Zenith in 1800's period costume in the Canada Day Parade this summer. Sidesaddle if I can borrow one. Long skirts, fancy hat, the works. It should be fun. |
